A therapeutic-style massage course: how it differs from relaxation massage and what a good course must teach
Lương Y (traditional healer) Tống Văn Huynh · Tong Gia Acupoint Wellness (Huyệt Đạo Tống Gia) · 20/10/2026
Quick summary: A therapeutic-style massage course differs from a relaxation massage course in that learners must know how to observe the body, find the right tense muscle areas and choose an approach that suits each person, instead of doing one fixed routine for every client. A good course needs to teach observation, muscle release, acupressure, the session routine and safety limits, with most of the time spent practising on real people. This article helps you know what to demand of a course before you sign up.
How does therapeutic-style massage differ from relaxation massage?
The two names sound similar, but the way they are done and the way they are learned are quite different. In short: relaxation massage follows a routine; therapeutic-style massage follows the person.
Relaxation massage
- Follows a fixed sequence, working evenly across the whole body.
- The main goal is comfort and calm during the session.
- Pressure is usually light to medium, rarely going deep into individual muscle groups.
Therapeutic-style massage (wellness-oriented)
- Before working, you must ask and observe: where the client feels sore or tired, how they sit and stand, what work they do.
- Focuses on tense muscle areas, combining muscle release and acupressure.
- Pressure changes by area and by person, sometimes light, sometimes deep.
- After the session there is aftercare advice: posture, rest, wellness habits.
To be clear: as Tong Gia understands it, "therapeutic" here means hands-on wellness care to help the body feel lighter and relaxed; it is not a medical service. People with prolonged pain, numbness or weakness that keeps getting worse, or an underlying condition need to see a doctor at a medical facility. A good therapeutic-style massage practitioner is one who knows when not to work.
What must a good therapeutic-style massage course teach?
Wherever you study, you can compare the programme against the following list.
1. Observe before laying hands
Look at how the person stands, uneven shoulders, how they bend their head, how they walk. Learners need to practise observing on real people, with someone showing them what is right and what is wrong.
2. Muscle release
Knowing how to find tight, stiff muscle areas and use the right pressure and rhythm to soften them. This is the part that needs the most hands-on hours.
3. Acupressure
Locating acupoints correctly on different bodies, not just learning them from diagrams. Knowing which acupoints can be used and which need caution.
4. A complete session routine
From greeting the client and asking about their condition, through working in sequence, to giving aftercare advice. With a routine, quality stays consistent, and a client coming back a second time finds it the same as the first.
5. Safety limits
The cases where you do not work or do not use strong pressure, and how to talk to clients so they go and see a doctor without feeling turned away.
6. Protecting the practitioner's own body
How to stand, and how to use your body weight instead of finger strength. Without this, new practitioners often get wrist pain after a few months.
Why should there be about 70% practice?
Therapeutic-style massage is a trade of feel. How much pressure is just right, what a tense muscle feels like under your fingers, how an acupoint shifts slightly between a slim person and a heavier one: you cannot learn these things from books.
So when choosing a course, you should ask:
- Is the practice on real people or on models?
- Do learners practise on each other, taking turns as the client to feel the pressure for themselves?
- How many learners does each instructor coach?
- Does the instructor personally correct each person's hands?
The smaller the class, the more chances you get to have your hands corrected. Mistakes made at the start that nobody corrects are very hard to unlearn later.
The therapeutic-style massage course at Tong Gia
Tong Gia was founded by Lương Y Tống Văn Huynh, who has more than 13 years in Eastern wellness care, Y Tướng Học (face reading for wellness) and spinal nerve-reflex balancing. He built the programme and teaches the classes himself.
The therapeutic-style massage content sits mainly in L2 Core Vocational Skills: muscle release, acupressure for the neck and shoulders, back and legs; the standard Tong Gia 90-minute session routine; communicating with clients. Before that, L1 Introduction to Y Tướng Học (1.500.000đ) teaches the "looking" part: the complexion, Five-Element body shapes, the 3 facial zones. Those who want to go deeper take L3 Expert in spinal nerve-reflex balancing. The full path is on the 4-level vocational ladder page. The course advisor will tell you the tuition for L2 to L4, the number of sessions and their length when you register.
How you learn:
- About 70% of class time is practice on real people: placing your hands, applying pressure, locating the muscle areas to work on.
- Small classes, with the Lương Y coaching each person individually.
- The rule: every observation from the face must be cross-checked by hand on the spine.
- The process taught is the one used every day at the two service branches in District 12 (225 Dương Thị Mười, 4.9★, 234 Google Maps reviews) and District 9 – Vinhomes Grand Park (5.0★, 183 reviews).
Tong Gia does not promise employment or income after the course. Ask the front desk directly about the kind of paperwork you receive after the course and its legal standing before you pay the tuition.
