What to learn to open a wellness massage shop: 6 areas an owner must master before opening day

Lương Y (traditional healer) Tống Văn Huynh · Tong Gia Acupoint Wellness (Huyệt Đạo Tống Gia) · 20/10/2026

Quick summary: What do you need to learn to open a wellness massage shop? Beyond hands-on skill, an owner needs to understand the session process, how to train and assess staff, how to communicate with customers, safety principles and the procedures of a conditional business line. Hands-on skill lets you do well at one bed; the other five areas keep the whole shop's quality up when you are not standing at the bed. At Tong Gia, processes and staff training are covered in L4 Master & Transfer.

Why good hands-on skill isn't enough to open a shop

Learn to know how to do it and apply it right away: a class at Tong Gia. Real Tong Gia clip.

Many skilled practitioners want to open their own shop. That's a fair ambition. But when you move from doing the work to owning the business, the job changes completely: you are no longer responsible only for one customer on one bed, but for every customer, every staff member, every shift.

So the question "what do you need to learn to open a wellness massage shop" has a longer answer than one technique course. Below are six areas, in the order Tong Gia thinks you should learn them.

Area 1: The owner's own hands-on skill

The owner doesn't have to be the best practitioner, but must be skilled enough to tell whether staff are doing it right or wrong. If you can't deliver a full session yourself, you won't know whether a customer's complaint is about the practitioner or the process.

At minimum you should have: muscle release, acupressure on the most common areas such as neck and shoulders, back and legs; and knowing how to observe the customer before working. At Tong Gia, this is L1 and L2.

Area 2: A session process written down

A shop that lasts is one where a returning customer who sees a different practitioner still gets the same quality. That only happens when the process is written down: how to welcome customers, what to ask before starting, the order of areas, the time for each part, how to finish and what advice to give.

This is called an SOP. It sounds grand, but it's really just a guide clear enough for new staff to read and follow, and for the owner to pick up and check against.

Area 3: Training staff and assessing skill

This is the area new owners skip most often. Once you've hired staff, who trains them to the shop's standard? What do you teach first? How long before they work with customers? How do you assess their skill to know they've reached the standard?

When it comes to what you need to learn to open a wellness massage shop, this is the part most people think of last. General suggestions that any training should include:

  • Teaching order: posture and safety first, techniques next, communication woven throughout.
  • A simple hands-on test before staff take real customers.
  • A regular refresher coaching schedule, because skills gradually slip if no one corrects them.

Area 4: Communicating with customers

Customers who come to a wellness shop usually bring a sore spot and a worry. How staff ask questions, explain and keep their word about timing decides whether customers come back. The owner needs to be able to teach staff the standard phrases: asking about the customer's condition before starting, asking about pressure during the session, giving advice afterwards.

And just as important: teach staff not to promise customers anything the shop can't deliver.

Area 5: Safety and the limits of a wellness shop

A wellness massage shop is a hands-on care and relaxation service, not a medical service. The owner must set clear rules for staff:

  • Customers with prolonged pain, numbness or weakness that keeps getting worse, an underlying condition, pregnancy, or a recent injury or surgery: ask carefully, work very gently or not at all, and advise the customer to see a doctor at a medical facility.
  • No strong pressure on swollen, hot or red areas, or areas with wounds.
  • No cracking or twisting of the spine. No advertising that the shop can "fix" illnesses.
  • Clean towels, beds and tools after every customer.

A shop that dares to say "for this, you should see a doctor first" keeps trust longer than a shop that takes on everything. If someone asks what to learn first to open a wellness massage shop, Tong Gia would answer: learn to know when to stop.

Area 6: Procedures for a conditional business line

Massage is a conditional business line in Vietnam. Besides business registration, there may also be requirements on facilities, security and public order, fire prevention and other conditions depending on the locality. Tong Gia doesn't list the details here because regulations can change; you should ask the authorities in the district where you plan to open directly, before renting premises.

It's also important to distinguish: physiotherapy is a profession within the medical sector, requiring formal training and a practice license under the law on medical practice. A wellness shop should not use names or advertising that make customers mistake it for a medical facility.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to know massage to open a massage shop? You don't have to be the best, but the owner should be skilled enough to tell whether staff are doing it right. Otherwise, it's very hard to keep quality up when customers complain.

What licenses do you need to open a wellness massage shop? Massage is a conditional business line, and the specific requirements depend on the locality. You should ask the authorities in the district where you plan to open directly, before renting premises.

What is an SOP in a massage shop? An SOP is a written process: welcoming customers, questions before starting, the order of areas, timing, aftercare advice. With an SOP, customers get the same quality whichever practitioner they see.

Can a massage shop owner train staff themselves? Yes, if there's a clear process and a way to assess skill before staff take customers. At Tong Gia, this is covered in L4 Master & Transfer.

Can a wellness massage shop advertise itself like a medical practice? It shouldn't. A wellness shop is a care and relaxation service, not a medical facility; customers with prolonged pain should be advised to see a doctor at a medical facility.
