An overview of Y Tướng Học: understand it properly before learning to read outward signs to understand the organs

Lương Y (traditional healer) Tống Văn Huynh · Tong Gia Acupoint Wellness (Huyệt Đạo Tống Gia) · 21/10/2026

Quick summary: The Y Tướng Học overview is the opening part that helps learners understand what Y Tướng Học (face reading for wellness) is, which Eastern medicine foundations it rests on and what it is used for: observing the face, skin tone and body shape to understand a person's constitution, and from there take the right care of health day to day. At Tong Gia, this is part 1 of the 4 parts of the L1 Introduction to Y Tướng Học course, studied before moving on to observing Spirit, Complexion and Form.

Y Tướng Học overview: what this subject is about

Introducing the free Saturday-morning trial class. Real footage from Tong Gia.

Y Tướng Học is a way of observing people based on Eastern medicine: looking at the face, skin tone, body shape, eyes and voice to understand the constitution inside. The phrase Tong Gia often uses to sum up this subject is "the inner organs are the cause, the outward signs are the effect". However the inside of the body is doing, matching signs will appear on the outside, and someone who knows how to look can read them.

Many people hearing the name for the first time assume it is fortune-telling by face reading. It isn't. Y Tướng Học says nothing about wealth, poverty or destiny. It answers just one question: where is this person worn out, and in which direction should we care for them? For a clearer view of the difference, you can read how Y Tướng Học differs from fortune-telling face reading.

The foundations of Y Tướng Học

The overview does not teach theory by rote. Learners only need to grasp a few core ideas so that the later parts have something to stand on:

  • Yin and Yang: the body always has two sides, hot and cold, active and still. Someone who tends to run hot inside, with a red face and fast speech, is different from someone with cold hands and feet, a pale complexion and slow speech.
  • The Five Elements and the 5 organs: Wood – Liver, Fire – Heart, Earth – Spleen, Metal – Lungs, Water – Kidneys. Each element has its own body shape, skin tone and habits. This part is expanded in the article 5 body types according to the Five Elements.
  • Qi and blood: with enough qi and blood, the complexion is fresh and the eyes are bright; with weak qi and blood, the skin looks dull, the eyes tired and the body sluggish.

These three ideas are enough for a beginner to understand why a wrinkle, a darkened patch of skin or a way of standing can mean something for taking care of one's health.

What Y Tướng Học is used for in everyday life

The L1 course is for individuals and families. The aim is to take better care of yourself and your parents, not to start working in the trade straight away. After the overview, learners will understand why Y Tướng Học is useful in some very everyday ways:

  1. Noticing earlier that the body is worn out. Complexion, the eye area and the way you walk change before you clearly feel tired.
  2. Choosing wellness habits that suit your constitution. People who tend to run hot and people who tend to run cold should not eat, drink or exercise the same way.
  3. Caring for parents more attentively. Older people are often reluctant to say they are tired; reading complexion and body shape helps children ask after them at the right time. See also learning acupressure at home to care for your parents.
  4. Knowing when to see a doctor. This is the most important point, studied in depth in part 4.

Where Y Tướng Học fits in Tong Gia's approach

Lương Y Tống Văn Huynh, founder of Huyệt Đạo Tống Gia, has worked in Eastern wellness practice for more than 13 years. Tong Gia's approach rests on 2 pillars:

  • Y Tướng Học: reading outward signs to understand the organs before laying on hands.
  • Wellness massage with spinal nerve-reflex balancing: cross-checking by hand on the spine.

Tong Gia's principle is that every impression drawn from the face must be re-checked by hand. Looking is only a step that suggests a direction, not a conclusion. At L1, learners get to know the first pillar. The second pillar is studied in depth at later levels, for example in the article what is spinal nerve-reflex balancing.

Common misunderstandings when starting Y Tướng Học

"You can tell the illness just by looking at the face"

Not true. Y Tướng Học shows tendencies in a person's constitution; it does not identify illness. Anyone who needs to know whether they are ill must go to a medical facility.

"You have to be good at Chinese characters and know ancient texts by heart to learn it"

Not necessary. The overview explains things in plain words, with examples on the learners themselves. Anyone who wants to read more can see the suggestions in Y Tướng Học books for beginners.

"Once you finish, you can work in the trade"

L1 is the introductory level, meant for self-care. Anyone who wants to pursue the trade continues through the levels of the 4-level vocational ladder. Tong Gia does not promise employment or income after the course.

The L1 Introduction to Y Tướng Học course has 4 parts
