Y Tướng Học Five Elements body types: recognising the 5 types Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth to care for yourself the right way

Lương Y (traditional healer) Tống Văn Huynh · Tong Gia Acupoint Wellness (Huyệt Đạo Tống Gia) · 21/10/2026

Quick summary: Y Tướng Học (face reading for wellness) Five Elements body types is a way of sorting a person's build, bone frame and face into five groups, Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth, to understand their constitutional tendencies and choose a wellness routine that suits them. Body type only offers hints; it does not determine health or personality, and most people are a mixed type. This article describes each type in the traditional way, how to observe correctly and how to use it in everyday care.

What are Y Tướng Học Five Elements body types?

Y Tướng Học: observing the 3 zones of the face. A real clip from Tong Gia.

The Five Elements (Ngũ Hành) are the five elements Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth that Eastern medicine uses to describe how nature and the body work. Y Tướng Học borrows this framework to sort body types: a large or small bone frame, a long or short torso, a square, long, round or pointed face, and a fast or slow way of walking and moving.

The aim is not to label anyone as good or bad. Knowing your body type helps you understand where your body tends to tire easily and what daily rhythm suits it, so you can care for it earlier and more appropriately. The saying "the inner organs are the cause, the outward features are the effect" applies here: body type is part of the outward features, reflecting the inner constitution over many years of living.

Description of the 5 body types according to the Five Elements

Below is the traditional description, simplified for beginners. Read it as a sketch, not a table of standards.

Wood type

Tall, slender, upright like a tree trunk. A slightly long face, long arms and legs. Often energetic and fond of working. In wellness terms, Wood types should pay attention to their rest rhythm and the flexibility of their tendons and muscles, since they tend to work non-stop and forget to stretch.

Fire type

A compact, angular build, with a face that narrows to a point at the bottom. Walks fast, talks fast. Fire types usually need to watch their sleep and periods of stress, since a fast pace of life easily leaves the body no time to rest.

Earth type

A full body, thick back, moderately broad shoulders, a round full face and a steady gait. Usually calm. Common wellness advice is to eat in moderation and move regularly so the body doesn't become sluggish.

Metal type

A compact, square bone frame, level shoulders, a square face and often bright skin. A sturdy, neat build. Metal types should keep their breathing deep, exercise outdoors and take care when the weather turns dry between seasons.

Water type

A soft, rounded build with no angular lines, a full face and slow, unhurried movements. Water types are usually advised to keep the body warm, do gentle regular exercise and not sit in one place for too long.

The suggestions above are general wellness suggestions, safe for most people. They do not say that any type will develop any particular illness.

Most people are a mixed type

Very few people are a pure type. Mixing two types is common: tall and slender like Wood but with a square face like Metal, or a full body like Earth but a fast gait like Fire. Students of Y Tướng Học are taught to recognise the main type and the secondary type, then combine this with complexion and the 3 zones of the face for a fuller picture. For the 3 face zones, see the clip at the top of the article and the article the 3 zones of the face according to Y Tướng Học.

How to observe body type correctly

  1. Look at the whole first, details later: stand a few steps away, look at the whole standing posture and gait, and only then look at the face and hands.
  2. Separate the inborn build from habit-driven posture: hunched shoulders, a rounded back and a forward head usually come from years of sitting badly, not from one's "features". This is what hands-on practitioners encounter most often.
  3. Ask questions: about work, sitting habits, exercise and sleep. Body shape changes with age and lifestyle.
  4. Cross-check by hand: every impression from the face and body type must be cross-checked by hand on the spine. If you see uneven shoulders, your hands must check whether the muscles on both sides of the spine are really uneven.

Step 4 is where Y Tướng Học meets Tong Gia's second pillar: therapeutic-style massage with spinal nerve-reflex balancing. Body type tells you where to pay attention; the hands on the spine tell you how things really are.

Using Five Elements body types in daily life

  • Self-care: knowing which type you lean towards helps you choose a suitable daily rhythm and kind of exercise.
  • Caring for family: understanding why, with the same meals and the same sleep schedule, each person reacts differently.
  • Working in hands-on care: a thin person with a small frame needs different hand pressure from a full-bodied person with a thick back. Observing body type helps the practitioner adjust pressure before laying on hands.

Limits to remember

Body type does not determine health, let alone destiny. Y Tướng Học is observation for wellness care; it is not fortune-telling and does not identify illness. Tong Gia is a hands-on wellness care service, not a medical service.

If you have prolonged pain, increasing numbness or weakness, rapid changes in posture such as hunching or tilting, unexplained weight loss, or an underlying condition, please see a doctor at a medical facility. Trade students must also know these cases so that they do not work on them and instead advise the customer to see a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which Five Elements body type I am? Look at the overall bone frame, height, face shape and the pace at which you walk and move. Most people are a mixed type, so learning in person with someone guiding you makes it easier to recognise your main and secondary types.

Do Five Elements body types reveal illness? No. Body type only hints at constitutional tendencies for wellness care. If you notice anything unusual, you should see a doctor at a medical facility.

How do the Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth types differ? According to the traditional description: Wood is tall and slender, Fire is compact and angular, Earth is full-bodied with a thick back, Metal is square, neat and sturdy, Water is soft and rounded. This is a sketch, not a rigid standard.

Are hunched shoulders and a rounded back part of one's "features"? Usually they come from years of sitting or standing with bad posture. The observer needs to separate the inborn build from habit-driven posture and cross-check by hand on the spine.
