Where to study Y Tướng Học? What you learn, who should study it, and how to choose a place true to the spirit of Eastern medicine
Lương Y (traditional healer) Tống Văn Huynh · Tong Gia Acupoint Wellness (Huyệt Đạo Tống Gia) · 14/10/2026
Quick summary: Y Tướng Học (face reading for wellness) is the way Eastern traditional medicine looks at the face, skin colour and body shape to understand the internal organs and choose how to care for them. Studying Y Tướng Học properly means learning observation with verification, not fortune-telling. In Ho Chi Minh City, Lương Y Tống Văn Huynh, founder of Tong Gia, teaches Y Tướng Học tied to hands-on spinal care. See class information at huyetdaotonggia.com.vn.
What is Y Tướng Học, and why study it?
Y Tướng Học is based on the saying “Hữu chư nội, tất hình chư ngoại”: whatever is inside will show on the outside. Learners are taught to look at tướng (the outward features: face, body shape, spine) to understand tạng (the five internal organs), and from there know what to ask, where to check, and which habits to suggest. Read the introduction in the article what Y Tướng Học is.
Studying Y Tướng Học is not for predicting destiny, and even less for drawing conclusions about illness in place of medical care. Lương Y Tống Văn Huynh tells his students: “We study Y Tướng not to tell fortunes, but to truly understand a human being.”
Who should study Y Tướng Học?
- Massage, acupressure and spa practitioners who want to understand why this person aches in this spot, instead of following one memorised routine for every client.
- People changing careers into hands-on health care, a trade that requires understanding people in a way machines can hardly replace.
- People who want to care for their family: noticing early when parents, a spouse or children are worn out, and knowing which habits to suggest.
- People in counselling, education or management who want to understand more about personality and habits through body shape from a health perspective.
What does a Y Tướng Học learning path usually cover?
According to Lương Y Tống Văn Huynh's internal training materials, “Y Tướng Học Lâm Sàng” (Practical Y Tướng Học), the content goes from foundations to practice:
Foundations
- “Y Tướng đồng nguồn” (features and organs share one source): features and organs are both nourished by Qi and Blood. The organs are the cause, the features are the effect.
- The five-step loop: weakened organs, negative emotions, imbalanced habits and posture, changing features, a difficult life. Understand the loop to know where to step in.
- The five sense organs and the five organs: the eyes with the Liver, the tongue and complexion with the Heart, the lips with the Spleen, the nose with the Lungs, the ears with the Kidneys.
Observation
- The five Five Elements body types Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth, and the governing organ of each type. See the 5 Five Elements body types.
- Thập Tự Tướng Pháp (the ten-shape method): 10 face shapes and their corresponding spinal regions. See 10 face shapes seen from a health perspective.
- Complexion (khí sắc): the five colours of the face, bright and moist versus dry and dark. See what your complexion says about your health.
- Features of each part: forehead, eyebrows, eyes, nose, lips, tongue, ears; bone structure and flesh.
Practice
- The three-step routine “nhìn tướng, an tạng” (read the features, settle the organs): observe, talk with the person according to their body-type traits, then care for the reflex system along the spine.
- Cross-checking by hand: reading the spine through skin temperature, muscle layers, the shape of the vertebrae, and the sensation when pressed.
- Wellness suggestions by body type: eating, daily schedule, breathing, posture.
- How to talk with clients: use understanding words, without judging or frightening.
Professional ethics
- “Tâm sinh tướng” (the mind shapes the features): learners cultivate themselves alongside the technique.
- Knowing the limits: Y Tướng Học is observation to suggest care. When you see worrying signs, the right thing to do is advise the client to see a doctor.
5 criteria for choosing where to study Y Tướng Học
Searching “where to study physiognomy” turns up many fortune-reading classes. If you want to study Y Tướng Học in the health direction, ask five things:
- Is it tied to Eastern medicine? The content must be based on Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, Qi and Blood and the meridians, not on fortune-telling conventions.
- Is there practice on real bodies? Reading a face without knowing how to cross-check by hand on the spine easily leads to wrong guesses.
- Does the instructor work in the trade every day? Y Tướng Học is a skill of people who actually do the work, observing many body types every day.
- Does it state the limits clearly? A school with the right spirit always says Y Tướng Học does not replace a medical check-up.
- Does it steer clear of superstition? It does not teach predicting bad years and does not sell “luck-changing” items. See also how Y Tướng Học differs from fortune-telling.

Can you teach yourself Y Tướng Học from books?
Yes, but only up to a point. Books help you grasp the theory: the five elements, the five colours, face shapes. The hardest part is seeing correctly on real people and cross-checking by hand: the same complexion already looks different under a different light; the same shoulder shape may have its root in the mid-back. That part needs an instructor to correct you directly. Suggestion: read books alongside supervised practice, starting by observing yourself and your family, as in the article Features are the effect, organs are the cause.
