Learning neck and shoulder wellness massage: the core skill of the trade and what you must know

Lương Y (traditional healer) Tống Văn Huynh · Tong Gia Acupoint Wellness (Huyệt Đạo Tống Gia) · 20/10/2026

Quick summary: Learning neck and shoulder wellness massage means learning five parts: observing posture, palpating to locate the muscle areas, muscle release with the right pressure, acupressure on the neck and shoulder area, and giving clients daily self-care advice. Just as important is knowing when not to work and advising the client to see a doctor. At Tong Gia, this skill belongs to level L2 Core Trade Skills; about 70% of class time is hands-on practice on real people, with Lương Y Tống Văn Huynh guiding each student personally. You can join a free Saturday-morning trial class before choosing a level.

Why the neck and shoulders are the "bread-and-butter" skill of therapeutic-style massage

Students practicing in a Tong Gia wellness massage class. A real Tong Gia clip.

People who sit at a computer, drive, or look down at their phones all day often complain of a tired neck, stiff shoulders and a heavy feeling at the back of the neck. That is why the neck and shoulders are usually the first area clients mention as soon as they lie down on the table.

For practitioners, this is the "bread-and-butter" skill: do this area well and clients feel it right away, remember your hands and come back. Fall short, or press too hard, and clients notice right away too. So anyone who wants to learn neck and shoulder wellness massage should regard it as a foundation lesson, not a side technique learned in a single session.

What Tong Gia wants to make clear from the start: the neck is an area through which many important structures pass. Learning this area is not just learning how to knead so it feels good, but learning how to look, how to touch the right spot with the right pressure, and knowing when to stop.

What does learning neck and shoulder wellness massage include?

Wherever you study, a decent neck and shoulder program should cover all five parts below. You can use this list to question any training provider.

1. Observe before laying hands

Before touching, the practitioner looks at how the client sits and stands: is the head pushed forward, are the shoulders uneven, is the upper back rounded, which side does the client tend to tilt the head toward. At Tong Gia, observation also includes complexion and body type according to the Five Elements of Y Tướng Học (face reading for wellness), taught at the L1 introductory level. But Lương Y's principle is that every impression from the face must be checked again by hand along the spine, never guessed.

2. Palpate to locate the muscle areas to work on

A tired back of the neck is not necessarily caused only by the neck muscles. Often the shoulder blade area, the area between the shoulder blades or the chest muscles are tight and pull the whole posture. Learners must practice palpating to tell which spots are tense, which are soft and where the client reacts with pain, rather than following one fixed routine for everyone.

3. Muscle release: pressure, rhythm and order

Muscle release is the part that takes the most practice time. Learners practice working from superficial to deep, from broad to narrow, keeping an even rhythm, and using the strength of the whole body rather than just the fingers. The right pressure is pressure the client finds satisfying without having to brace against it. The wrong pressure often leaves soreness for several days.

4. Acupoints of the neck and shoulder area

According to Eastern traditional medicine, the neck and shoulder area has many familiar acupoints such as Phong Trì (Fengchi) and Kiên Tỉnh (Jianjing). Learning acupoints is not just memorizing names, but finding the right location on each person, pressing in the right direction and for the right length of time. Eastern traditional texts also note that some shoulder-area acupoints should not be pressed strongly on pregnant women. The specific list of acupoints in class is taught by Lương Y directly on the learner's hands.

5. Closing the session and advising the client

A good session ends with a few simple pieces of advice: change sitting posture, rest the eyes, move the neck gently, keep the back of the neck warm. This is the daily self-care part, helping clients look after themselves between visits.

How is a neck and shoulder care session structured?

Beginners tend to pour all their strength into the first ten minutes and then run out of routine. When learning neck and shoulder wellness massage, you should practice dividing the session into steps: ask the client a few questions, observe, work superficially to warm up, do deep muscle release in the identified areas, apply acupressure, then close and give advice.

At level L2 Core Trade Skills, Tong Gia students learn the standard Tong Gia 90-minute session routine, covering the neck and shoulders, back and legs. The neck and shoulders are practiced most thoroughly because this is the area clients ask about most. Once they master the full routine, practitioners can shorten a session to focus only on the neck and shoulders while keeping the correct order.

When not to work on the neck and shoulders and to advise the client to see a doctor

This is the part Tong Gia values most, because Tong Gia is a hands-on wellness and relaxation care service, not a medical service. Trainees must know to stop and advise clients to go to a medical facility when they notice signs such as:

  • Neck pain lasting many weeks that does not improve despite rest.
  • Increasing numbness or weakness in the arms, often dropping things.
  • Dizziness, nausea or blurred vision when turning the neck.
  • A recent blow, fall or accident involving the head and neck.
  • Fever, or a swollen, hot, red neck area.
  • Underlying conditions such as blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes that are not being monitored by a doctor.

In short: prolonged pain, increasing numbness or weakness, underlying conditions... mean see a doctor at a medical facility first. A skilled practitioner is not someone who can work on everyone, but someone who knows who should not be worked on.

Checking a neck and shoulder training provider yourself

Before paying for a neck and shoulder wellness massage course anywhere, you can ask:

  • How much of the time is hands-on practice on real people, and how much is lecture?
  • How many people are in the class, and who corrects my hands?
  • Do you teach observation before touching, or do we just follow a routine from day one?
  • Do you clearly teach the cases where you must not work?
  • Is the routine being taught actually used at a business currently serving clients?

Which Tong Gia level covers the neck and shoulders?

Tong Gia Acupoint Wellness was founded by Lương Y Tống Văn Huynh, who has more than 13 years in Eastern traditional wellness, Y Tướng Học and spinal nerve-reflex balancing. He builds the curriculum and teaches the classes himself. The training ladder has 4 levels; see the overview on the 4-level training ladder page:

  • L1 Introduction to Y Tướng Học (1.500.000đ): reading complexion, Five Elements body types, the 3 facial zones, daily self-care, a few safe self-care acupoints, practice in pairs.
  • L2 Core Trade Skills: muscle release and acupressure for the neck and shoulders, back and legs; the 90-minute session routine; communicating with clients. This is the level for learning neck and shoulder work as a profession.
  • L3 Specialist and L4 Master and Transfer are for those with solid hands-on skills and business owners.

About 70% of class time is hands-on practice on real people: placing hands, applying pressure, locating the muscle areas to work on. Classes are small, and Lương Y guides each person. The routine is used daily at the two service branches in District 12 (225 Dương Thị Mười, Phường Tân Chánh Hiệp) and District 9 (Vinhomes Grand Park). Tuition for L2 to L4, number of sessions and duration are provided by a consultant or the front desk when you register.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn neck and shoulder massage well enough to work on clients? It depends on each person's background and how diligently they practice. At Tong Gia, the neck and shoulders are taught in level L2 Core Trade Skills; the number of sessions and duration are provided by a consultant or the front desk when you register.

Can I go straight into neck and shoulder massage with no background? Yes, but it is better to first have a foundation in observation and a few safe self-care acupoints. You can come to the Saturday-morning trial class so Lương Y can check your hands-on skills and suggest whether to start at L1 or L2.

Is neck and shoulder massage dangerous? The neck is a sensitive area, so you must learn the right pressure, the right location and the cases where you must not work. When a client has prolonged pain, increasing numbness or weakness in the arms, dizziness, or an underlying condition that is not being monitored, the practitioner must stop and advise the client to see a doctor at a medical facility.

Is cracking the neck until it pops the right way to do neck and shoulder massage? No. Tong Gia's program teaches muscle release and acupressure by hand; it does not teach cracking or manipulating the neck. Hearing a pop is not a measure of a good care session.

Where can I learn neck and shoulder massage in Ho Chi Minh City, Thủ Đức? Tong Gia's classes are held at Vinhomes Grand Park, TP. Thủ Đức, with a free trial class 8:30–12:00 every Saturday morning. Message Zalo 0888 264 559 to reserve a spot.
